Enthusiastic Crowds at Land Conservation Conference

September 24th, 2008 by Island Press

Island Press was proud to participate in this year’s Rally 2008: National Land Conservation Conference in Pittsburgh, PA from Sept. 18-21.

As a first-time exhibitor, I was enthusiastic about the crowd and theme of the conference, “Bridging Our Past-Connecting Our Future,” and was glad to see conference attendees matched my enthusiasm!  The attendees mostly hailed from land trusts around the country and Latin America, but there were also representatives from academic programs, land policy institutes and think tanks, software-development companies, and non profit and US government agencies.  We spoke with many members of land trusts from the Pittsburgh area who were passionate about preserving Pennsylvania’s green space.  Several attendees also commented that browsing through Island Press’s new titles is one of the highlights of each year’s Land Trust Alliance Rally.

Several of Island Press’s authors, including Story Clark, Tim Lindstrom, and Jim Levitt, were popular speakers during sessions, and stirred up a lot of interest in conservation finance and Island Press’s full line of land use planning books in general.  Clark’s Field Guide to Conservation Finance and Lindstrom’s Tax Guide to Conservation Easements were big sellers, as they make complex subjects accessible for the general land trust professional.  I am looking forward to seeing some familiar faces and meeting some new ones at next year’s Land Trust Alliance Rally in Portland, Oregon, and am excited about the new titles we will have to showcase!
